Le Labo’s Ylang 49 (2013)

I think I finally “understand” what Ylang 49 is. It’s Clinique’s Aromatic Elixir II.

As a Le Labo fanboy, I purchased Ylang 49 without question asked. However, Y49 is sooooo out of my comfort zone for it is sooooo dense, so unapologetically concentrated. If the name Ylang suggests a light breezy tropical floral perfume like it is from the house of L’artisan Parfumeur, you will be fooled. It’s the first garland-wearing-beast I have ever encountered.

But I often wonder if there is any perfume that smells similar to Ylang 49; if not, then it’s quite an innovative perfume. Well, a few months later I discovered Aromatic Elixir and everything became clear to me – Y49 is a tribute to Aromatic Elixir, which is almost 40 years old, and I think it’s very amusing.
